The D40 is also a nice alternative from what I've read. It only auto focuses with AF-S lenses, but most new Nikkor lenses (including the one it's kitted with) work. Personally, I have the D50 and I love it.

The issue with shooting in RAW is the premium that comes with it. Decent software for RAW editing costs a very good amount, in some cases more expensive than the camera itself. Nikon's included software doesn't allow for RAW editing, which is something to consider when purchasing a DSLR.

I'd love to have a DSLR, but I'm always wanting the bleeding edge features of the $2000 models.
